Wednesday's 8-27 Tin Star Jam

It was that kind of an evening at the Tin Star, last night.

The women were friendly.

Frisky.

Demure.

Oh, and friendly.

The guys were kind of digging it.

Inside, Ben was, as always, maintaining his cool while running the jam.

There was the usual socializing.

And playing.

Here's a bit of King of the Road from early in the evening.

Come on out and join us next Wednesday.

The Mud Ponies at the Tin Star last Sunday

The Mud Ponies get together once a year at Indian Market to play. Last Sunday they were at the Tin Star, and it was a party. Unfortunately I had to leave before some of the local famous people, like Wes Studi and his wife showed up. Another photographer got a picture of them & sent it to me, though.

Check it out, here's a bit of one of their early numbers.

They sounded pretty good to Laura.

Everybody was having a good time.

Roque was there, supplying his award-winning Carnitas.

The players.

Next year I'm staying for the whole party...

Shenanigans at last Wednesday's jam

I wasn't going to mention this, because after all, this is a "PG" rated program. However, there were some shenanigans going on at one of the tables during last Wednesday night's jam:

Wednesday's 8-20 Tin Star Jam

Last night a bunch of people showed up to help "Freaky Que Suave" Freddie Lopez celebrate his birthday. Freddie wasn't making a big deal out of it, but we enjoyed helping him celebrate.

Happy Birthday Freddie!

Click any picture to enlarge, click the play button to listen to a music link.

An extra helping of Santa Fe's and Albuquerque's very own musicians showed up for the occasion. I won't try to name them all, but you will recognize them when you see their pictures. We kicked off the evening with some good old-fashioned blues.

Here are some of the players:

A bit later in the evening the musical herd had thinned out some, and Murali, perhaps saddened by having noted the ravages that time had wreaked on Freddie, kicked off a tear-jerking version of St. James Infirmary Blues.

Craig revived our spirits by following with some Jump And Jive.

It made Ray want to bust a move.

Tone said that Ray's move hurt his eyes.

It knocked Neil's hat sideways.

Lela said, "DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN!"

The crowd all agreed that it would probably be best if Ray kept his moves to himself from now on.

He plays a pretty mean guitar, though. Seriously, Ray: we love ya!

Glad you could all make it out last night to help Freddie celebrate! See you next time.

Pete Springer and Don Curry last night at the Tin Star

The Tin Star Saloon is a class act. We're always having sophisticated people stop by. Last night it was Paul Newman and his attractive companion who dropped in for a listen.

Click any picture to enlarge, click the play button to listen to a music link.

The band cooked up some great stuff -- the music was terrific and the bar was full of happy people. Not everybody was cheerful, though:
Maybe next time his owner will let him come in too.

Pete Springer, Don Curry, and Andy on drums cranked out good classic rock all evening long. Check out this Tom Petty number.

Pete

Don

Andy

See how many other Santa Fe musicians you can recognize in these pictures.

Earlier in the evening we stopped in at the Second Street Brewery to hear Dave Waldrop's new band, The Gumbo Project. Check them out here. Hope to hear you guys sometime soon at the Tin Star, Dave.

Thanks, everybody! See you the next time.

Wednesday's 8-13 Tin Star Jam

We had a busy evening at the Tin Star last night. The bar was pretty much at capacity again towards the latter part of the evening/early Thursday morning...

Click any picture to enlarge, click the play button to listen to a music link.

Horns. Once again we had them last night:

Big ones.

Little ones.

Three in a row.

Frank brought his trumpet.

We had a surprise visitor last night: Rachel Roberts. Rachel is a young singer/composer/musician who was visiting Santa Fe from Akron Ohio. Here she is with Ben, tuning her guitar.

And here she is belting out an opening number.

Rachel brought a small entourage with her last night.

A bit later Ben and Rachel had some rap fun: check it out.

As has become the norm, we had a healthy turn out of musicians show up to sign the play sheet.

Craig Small.

Ray Dera.

Alex.

Yi Yi.

Ramon (he's the hairy one in the middle).

Tom Kendrot.

Miguel and Laura were hustling -- the place was packed from about 11:00 - on.

Thanks for the great turn out, everybody. See you next time.

I've been slacking

I've been slacking: I'm at least one post overdue -- Nora McMahon and Case Tanner at the Tin Star last Thursday. To make up for being so late, I'll combine that post with one from Nora & Case at the Cowgirl last night.

Click any picture to enlarge, click the play button to listen to a music link.

Last Thursday this wonderful image in red appeared at the Tin Star while we were playing:

Also, it was Case's birthday. We got him a cigarette lighter...

Dave Waldrop joined us on drums that night. Dave's new band is named Gumbo Project, hope to hear you in the Tin Star soon!

Here we are doing an Ani Difranco song.

Now, on to that other
bar, last night.

Sunday nights at the Cowgirl have an interesting flavor. At 8:00 when the band starts, there is still the family crowd seated, finishing dinner. But then as the evening progresses, The CG reverts to it's normal night time ambiance.

For a while there, you could cut the ambiance with a knife, but then Nora did a Nanci Griffith number, So Long Ago, and all was well once more.

Many thanks to the appreciative crowd at the Cowgirl last night! Until next time,

Nora "Sweetsounds" McMahaon at the Tin Star Tonight!

Come on out, 9:00.

Wednesday's 8-6 Tin Star Jam

Click any picture to enlarge, click the play button to listen to a music link.

Ok, let's just cut to some of the highlights from last night:

Here's a musical highlight, led by the gentleman pictured below. You have a great voice, James. Please visit the Tin Star jam again! James Campbell Caruso is the Chef Owner of La Boca one of Santa Fe's finest restaurants. Also, nice work on the bass, Tom.

Care for an Absinthe? The Tin Star now has an Absinthe serving system. Vincent Van Gogh's favorite beverage was a definite highlight of the evening.

Fairly early on in the evening, we already had 16 musicians signed up.

Ben worked so hard on organizing the musicians and equipment that he needed to take a break:

A couple of the Santa Fakers hung out all night. Also joining us was another Santa Fe musician, Teri Lynn.

More highlights:

A few of the other musicians who came out last night:

Towards the end of the evening Gordy and his entourage kicked off a bit of late night music in the key of Gb. Or F#; take your pick. You horn players out there understand the pain this key can bring to the brass and woodwind sections. However, here's a slice that goes down fairly smoothly.

All in all, it was a very pleasant evening. See you next time.

Last Night's Sterling O'Neill Band Party at the Tin Star

There's this guy who always sits at the back of the saloon, and he always seems to be in such a good mood.

Click any picture to enlarge, click the play button to listen to a music link.

Last night was no exception. I mean, this guy is always smiling. Maybe he likes crowds, or perhaps it's the music. Or maybe it's just his nature; he always seems pleased with life. Gotta hand it to him.

In any event, the Tin Star was

last night for the Sterling O'Neill Sunday evening dance party. We ended up having a pretty good turn-out .

There were dancing feet:

as well as whole dancers.

And of course, there was the Sterling O'Neill band.

Bill Sterling:

Steve O'Neill:

George Honea:

We met a few new people last night. A drummer from Oakland (sitting next to a harmonica player we already know...)

Don Curry, who often plays at the Tin Star with Pete Springer.

Tony Buford stopped in.

As well as a bunch of ladies who enjoyed having their picture taken for the blog:

The band sounded great! Here they are doing a bit of ZZ Top, and Your Mama Don't Dance.

See you soon at the next Tin Star music event!
