Misc Shots

Froze my *ass* off riding 400 miles up the Pacific Coast Highway today. 50 degrees & fog the whole day. Nice twisties, though. There is not a straight section of road anywhere on CA-1.

From snow to desert heat

From the snow banks in the Colorado mountains yesterday to desert canyon country & 100 degree temps today. Here's a bit of Capitol Reef just west of Green River, UT.

And here are a few pics from the historic Hotel Nevada, built in 1929. Six stories tall, it was the tallest building in Nevada for ten years. Lots of famous people have stayed here over the years.

Flat Top Scenic Highway

I put about 440 miles on the bike today. This morning I took an 80-mile side trip over the Flat Tops Scenic Byway, just south of Steamboat Springs, CO.

40 of the 80 miles was dirt, and the road only opened for the season last week. This picture shows a section near one of the 10,000 foot passes that was still covered with snow last week.

I ended the day enjoying 100 degree temps in lovely (not) Green River, UT.

Gone for a couple of weeks

Postings to the Tin Star Music blog will be a bit sparse for the next two weeks. I'm hopping on the scooter Monday morning to take a little ride out to the west coast. A couple of blogger noobees may, or may not try to capture this coming Wednesday's jam in pictures & sound. If they do, I'll see about making a post en-route.

Zoe at the Tin Star last night

Zoe, Case, and Milton played at the Tin Star last night.


Ray Dera sat in for a good deal of the evening, and I joined them for a couple as well.

Wednesday's 6-18 Tin Star Jam

Last night produced some good music. You'll have to take my word for it though, because I forgot to put the memory card back in my recorder before sticking it in the side pocket of my sax bag. I took lots of pictures, however.

I was happy to see this '70's vintage Kawasaki 550 parked out front. I used to ride with a friend who had one like it.


Many of the usual suspects were there.


Some of them were rather suspicious.

And guess what: he can!

Update to last night's music

First, Nora McMahon & Case Tanner's gig at Backroad: I had limited battery power in my recorder (and no camera), but I at least captured this short, fun version of Ain't No Sunshine.

Later, over at the Tin Star Saloon, Ben Lucero and Y.Que were dishing up some kick-ass Latin jazz rock fusion. At midnight the place was rockin' and everybody was dancing. A good time.

PS: Sunday 6-16-2008, 9:24pm. I just now had a chance to take a careful listen to this rendition of Ain't No Sunshine. I really like how Case accompanied/backed me up during the tail end of my solo. You're a good bass, Case.

No Tin Star Jam post this week

I'll be out of town this week, so unless someone else wants to contribute a post, there won't be one for this Wednesday's jam. There will be a jam though: come on out!

Also, don't forget that Ben Lucero and his band Y.Que will be playing this Friday, June 13 at the Tin Star. 9:30pm, $5 cover.

Wednesday's 6-4 Tin Star Jam

We probably had 20 - 25 musicians show up over the course of the evening last night. At one point I counted 5 congas, a couple bongos, and the trap set, all shared between 5 percussionists. There were three guitar players, a couple of trumpets, a harmonica player or two, and a sax, all snuggling up together on stage.

Around midnight (why does that sound familiar?) a largish group of us launched off into a monster 12 minute, 47 second jam. Take a listen as you look at the pictures from the evening below. However, before you listen to the jam, check out the interview that Ben Lucero (a famous Santa Fe musician) conducted of another famous Santa Fe musician, Mike Handler (aka Harmonica Mike) in-between sessions.

Ben remained calm during all of this.


Kenny Skywolf dropped in to lead us off on a few tunes.


The bartenders are convinced that musicians are a bit "touched".

However, the bartenders at the Tin Star are the kind of people who are willing to go out on a limb for their customers.


Did I mention that the Tin Star is a friendly place? That guy back in the corner is always smiling.


Some of the old crew from the Evangelo days have started to show up for the Wednesday jam.


Around midnight, coincidently, is when the Tin Star found itself once more full of people who had come to listen and dance to the music.
